Moorchungas, Morchangs, Moorsing
The moorchunga, morchang, or moorsing as it is known in the Indian sub continent is an ancient instrument of music, tantra & healing. Few Tribal people in India still preserve this ancient practice. Instruments made by hand in the holy fire have special powers & sounds that penetrate deep into a person’s inner world.
In ancient tradition, her simple design represents Shiva’s trishul as well as Natural & Cosmic union. She can be utilized as an instrument of peace & may be harnessed for various purposes when using different metals, wood or bone.
Ancient Traditions

Playing & Meditation
Breath is the most important part of playing a morchang. One keeps the awareness on the Inhale & Exhale at all times. Correct Posture or Sitting Straight is key. She is an instrument of Meditation & Pranayama. Her simple acoustics lead one into a journey within. She can further open one to many different areas of our awareness when played with a balanced mind & heart.
Some moorchungas are designed to be played on the teeth & some on the lips. Her design determines her playing.
Care & Love
She is an ancient spirit & requires care & oiling with edible oils. To extend her life & keep her spirit radiant, the instrument can be housed / kept in a comfortable & proper design box. Some moorchungas are designed to be played on the teeth & some on the lips. Her design determines her playing.

History & Culture
Design
Workshops and lessons focus on connecting sound with breath. Once this is established playing ‘freestyle’ is encouraged to gain comfort levels and mastery. Folk and classical music styles from around India will be touched upon.
Participants will be exposed to knowledge and various findings from India and across the world connected with the instrument.
The Morchang has been used cross culturally to train animals and birds. For instance, players in Siberia and Mongolia use the instrument to communicate with horses and eagles. Participants may therefore even experiment with playing in the presence of horses, elephants and bison.
Training & Communication with Animals
The design of this unique instrument varies according to country and cultures around the world. Even within these, you can find local differences! Design shapes can be round, triangular or straight. Design elements can include lizards, fish, dragons and more.
The morchang is mentioned in the Rig Veda for various hymns and songs. It is practiced by musicians from around India. It is used by traditional Karnatak musicians. Folk musicians of Rajasthan and gypsies play the morchang in devotional music and to inspire communities at weekly gatherings and festivals. Tribal people in Assam are known to make and play morchangs in bamboo that are played on the lips and have a uniquely beautiful sound. Nepal, has an ancient tradition with the instrument where the morchang is known as ‘moorchunga’ and ‘binayo’. It was protected and supported by the royal family of the kingdom until the 21st century. It is played during harvest festivals to thank nature spirits, between courting lovers and for healing.
The morchang isn’t simply limited to India and is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world, dating back to 2,400 years. Known also as the mouth harp or Jew’s harp, it can be found all over the globe in places of ancient culture. The materials used, the lineages of music styles and the craftsmanship vary of course. However, cross culturally it is known to be used in taming animals and birds. And it is a vital part of the oral culture, finding its way into tales and mythologies of its keepers.

Align yourself
Music and The Human Body
Our human body responds to the frequencies of sounds. Playing and listening to specific patterns of notes can bring about a change in our body’s vibrational frequencies. Therefore, when we feel like we are ill or generally not feeling in harmony within ourselves, we can use musical instruments to ‘fine-tune’ ourselves. The workshops will bring about an awareness of a system of knowledge that correlates musical notes for each body centre.
The mouth harp is a breath instrument. Through the breath, we return to ourselves — to our own heartbeat. Together with the instrument, we merge with the rhythm within. Finding our inner sound, carried by the heartbeat, can take us to the rhythm divine — beyond ourselves, and yet, ironically, to a place entirely familiar. The place of source. The unstuck sound. The place where it all began. Back to the body, where mind, spirit and heart dance together, where all the senses meet, and all worlds become one.
